I created a nifty little server using freenas. I havent done any networking like this before. I have it all setup, all my computers can connect to it. My question is, since i have enabled FTP access to it, where can i find the address to connect from a friends house across down via ftp. Im using a D-link DIR 615 router and i do have the FTP daemon enabled on the server. My friend is a complete fool when it comes to computers so i need to know i have it right before i head to his house to see if it works. Thanks in advance for the help
Well that really isn't an issue with the NAS then. You need to forward the FTP ports on your router to the LAN IP of the NAS, and then give your friend your WAN IP address (check it with something like whatismyip.com). It would make things easier if you setup a dynamic domain name or something along those lines, but it isn't strictly necessary.
i created a dynamic dns via dyndns.com. i try to connect to my ip, or using the hostname they gave me from my computer and it wont connect. i can connect if i type in the ip the router assigns the server from my computer. I think im missing something, im just not sure what it might be. I have the ports forwarded in my router. Any ideas of what i should check would be greatly appriciated
well i figured out it wasnt something i didnt do, it was my routers firmware, i had to update it because of a bug where it wouldn't forward ftp traffic. i updated it and now its all smooth sailing. Thanks for your help ^_^
