How Linux detects GSM/GPRS/UMTS cards?

I'm developing an application to monitorize the network interfaces plugged in my PC. I know that wireless interfaces are listed in /proc/net/dev, but I don't know how to identify a cellular NIC.

Is there any virtual file in /proc that shows the cellular NICs in the system? Could I identify different cellular NICs looking at /dev/tty?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I don't know the answer to your question, but I know that Ubuntu recognises those NICs automatically (I have one and I was surprised with it!!).
Maybe if you introduce the card into one Ubuntu system, you can realise how it works, and then port the solution to any other system.

hope this helps!

Thanks for your response, but the problem is that I need to know it in a independent manner from the environment and the NIC. For example, the asigned name in /dev should be different if there would be any other USB device plugged in (there are lots of examples that talks about /dev/ttyUSB0).
