How do I talk to a remote (Windows shared) printer?

(Slackware 13)

Sorry if I come across agitated, but I've been fighting to get my printer working for hours now and I have real work that needs to get printed.

Printer is on a Windows XP share. Samba is working and I can share files fine across network. Now I need the printer to work.

This is printer I want to use (real workgroup/host names being changed for example):

# smbtree
Password:
WORKGROUP
.
.
.
\\WINXP\HP LaserJet 1020

Smbclient can see it.

(For this example)
WORKGROUP = WORKGROUP
HOST = WINXP
PRINTER = HP Laserjet 1020
(This is the real name of the printer.)

So, I try to config it in cups with the web interface.

http://127.0.0.1:631

Add Printer, Name/Location/Description (self explanatory)
Device: Windows Printer via Samba

Device URI: smb

STOP. STOP. STOP. STOP.

What is the convention used here? None of these worked.

smb://WINXP/HP LaserJet 1020
smb://WINXP/"HP LaserJet 1020"
smb://WORKGROUP/WINXP/HP LaserJet 1020
smb://WORKGROUP/WINXP/"HP LaserJet 1020"
smb://192.168.0.110/HP LaserJet 1020
smb://192.168.0.110/"HP LaserJet 1020"

(Depending on what Howto you read, you get a different story of what the convention is.)

and then you have this "user:info" thing that I've tried every combination of.

What 'user'? User on the Linux computer or user on the WinXP computer? What is the story here?

Basically, what do I actually type into this "Device URI" box ???
.

Hello, thank you for the reply. Yes, CUPS is installed and working. I have a standalone network (IP) printer working under CUPS, but I really need the Windows-shared (laser) printer working.

The standalone (IP) printer is ink and ink is expensive. I'm going to be printing hundreds of pages out at a time and need to use the laser printer.

Its working now.

Downloaded and built foo2zjs from source and then selected it's HP 1020 PPD.

# wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/foo2zjs.tar.gz

Convention simply was:
smb://hostname/printername

(Although I did use IP for hostname as that is one less thing to eventually break.)

Most HP Laserjet printers use hplip. Using Google with the terms `hplip HP Laserjet 1020' brings up this page:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...rjet_1020.html
Which may be helpful for others using this printer.
