Question How do I Remote access/Desktop Linux from a Windows machine

Hello,
Bit of a linux newbie, and need some help with remote access/Desktop.

Basically I want to Remotely control a Linux machine from a Windows based one.

For uploading files, running programs, etc.

The connection would be across the Internet, the windows in question is Windows XP Pro with Service pack 2, remotely accessing the Linux Red Hat 9.0 machine.

Any and all Help would be much appreciated.

In case your wondering why, its for a Never winter Nights Persistent world server we opted for linux because 1 its cheaper, and 2 its less memory/CPU intensive(at least for what we want it to do)

Thanks in advance

Hello! and welcome to LQ

you could us VNC to remotly connect to a computer

at a terminal try typing x0vncserver
if not found you may need to install it.

if found make a folder /home/yourname/.vnc/vncpasswd

in that folder type your password you want to use to connect

then in a terminal type x0vncserver -passwordfile /home/username/.vnc/vncpasswd

it will auto start on port 5900

Now download a vnc client like tight vnc for windows and enter the IP address of the linux box followed by a :and the port number after it

so like 192.168.0.2:5900

I have used Webmin and VNC. I am trying to use Putty, but sometimes the CLI takes a lot of work to learn and I don't have the time. I hope to get to the point where I can do everyting via CLI.

I have tried VNC but didn't like it - the GUI was just too slow for my liking. I usually administer my Debian box from my PowerBook via ssh. If you can do what you need to do via the command line this might be the easiest option. As fas as I know windows doesn't have ssh built-in, but you can download Putty (telnet / ssh) for free. You probably don't need to know too many command for uploading files (wget, scp, ftp...) and running programs.
