Hi.Ive been using dialup until recently with no problems. The kids pestered me into getting broadband which I did and on their windows box its pretty simple to connect.I now want to connect my Slackware box as well,so I got hold of an Etec modem/router,thinking I could connect both machines with this. This is when the fun begins.Slack detects my ethernet card and alls well there but I cant figure out how to then connect to the modem and to the net.I have to log on with a user name and password to connect on the windows machine (using the crappy speedtouch usb modem).I also have a static IP address. This isnt just a slackware problem as I cant get it to work on the windows box either. The connection uses PPPoA ? and I am at a loss as what to do.Im loving broadband but hating having to use windows to do it.Anyone out there with a similar setup,or who knows how to configure it all.Cheers.
You should be able to use your modem/router to connect both machines. Obviously your ADSL line has to be connected to that modem/router rather than the Speedtouch modem. The router probably has a web-based configuration tool, so check the documentation for it. You'll be able to enter your username and password there. You can run netconfig in Slack to set up your connection to the router. When you run netconfig, you'll need to supply a name for your machine and either enter an IP address for it or choose to use DHCP to obtain an address. Again, the router is likely to support DHCP, so you can just use that. That should be all that's necessary really.
You mention 2 different modems ("Etec modem/router" & "crappy speedtouch usb"), are they both DSL & particularly are you trying to use them both at once?
(Forgive my ignorance if these are well known brands in the UK.)
I am able to get logged into the Etec router and enter a username/password (I got a user manual PDF from the web) but I cant get DHCP to obtain the address.I have to enter a couple of numbers to "dial" the isp,I am NOT trying to use both modems at the same time.USB modem is unplugged when I try to configure the router.I will try again with this over the weekend. Thanks all.
