I don't know if it's even installed on RH, butthe real question is why do you want it?

If you want to connect to the machine, use ssh instead. If you want to check a service is working, the telnet command should work be default (eg telnetting port 25 to check smtp response)

HI dude,

YOu can stop and start the telnet using /etc/init.d/xinetd start /stop.
As telnet is a part of xinetd. You can disable telnet by editing the file /etc/xinetd.d/telnet.
Change disable = yes

Is there any graphical tool (GUI) to manage all these servers and configure them.

Telnet and SSH server do the same job, but one (SSH) is more safer than other one. What is really difference when you configure each. I mean how you know that I have configured SSH or Telnet.

Hello,

In order to setup a telnet server, you need to install the telnet server package by using the command :

# yum install telnet-server ( RHEL5)

# up2date -i telnet-server (RHEL4 or below)

You have the configuration file /etc/xinetd.d/telnet after installing the said package.

Edit the line 'disable = yes' to 'disable = no' and restart the xinetd service.

After this step you will have a telnet server running on your machine.

If you are just probing a remote machine's port using telnet, you just need the telnet client which is installed by default in RHEL.

Please let us know if you have any problems.

Regards,

Vimal Kumar

If you want to check if the daemon is up do:

netstat -lnp | grep 23

Hope this helps.
