Help with RTL8029(AS) please :(

I just installed Mandrake Linux 10.0 on my brothers machine and everything is working perfectly except for the ethernet card. It is already set to use the ne2k_pci driver, and doing ifconfig returns it as having the correct ip settings (192.168.1.9) and being active. I can ping the machine from itself, but the router (192.168.1.1) or my pc (192.168.1.23) are inaccessible.

I've tried restarting the device, changing settings, etc. However nothing seems to make it work The light also isn't active on the hub. It is a combo network card (bnc and rj45) and im wondering if perhaps its trying to access the network through the bnc connector? If so how do i change that?

THanks for any help - WerX

Lacking the DOS floppy disk that came with the card you can try the diagnostics and setup programs here:
http://www.scyld.com/ethercard_diag.html

If you do not have a link light then it is possible the card is not configured for 10baseT. The RTL8029 is a 10MB so if the other PC has a 10/100 card the hub should also be capable of 10/100.

Thats what I was thinking, as I know this card works perfectly with the router under windows. I'll try that link and let you know how it goes... thanks

I can't get that to compile :/ I'm pretty much a newb when it comes to Linux, and the compiler gives me a lot of syntax errors when trying to compile the diagnostic prog

Hmm ... the same with me. It compiles on an older distro with an older compiler.

My PC with a 8029 is running linux / Windows 95. There are no settings to configure anything on the card in the windows control panel. Have you checked your windows settings? I assume your PC is dual boot?

ethtool is another utility but probably will not be usefull with the 8029. I have several configuration disk for an 8029 chipset (location is another issue) and may not work with your card but I could send you a file as a last resort.

ifconfig output *goes upstairs with pen and paper* now my hand aches heh, but here goes

ifconfig

RX bytes:0 (0.0b) TX bytes:240 (240.0b)

lo

Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

TX packets:71 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:4646 (4.5Kb) TX bytes:4646 (4.5Kb)

phew, typed it correctly I believe. I have checked the windows settings and the card is set to use the rj45 port in windows.

Those config tools could be useful, though I still dont know what the problem actually is :/ my email addy is werx@thinkgin.co.uk if you want to send me them thanks again for the help people

It is possible that windows is overriding the default power on configuration of the card. When I changed my network from 10base2 (coax) to 10baseT (RJ45) I used the floppy disk setup utility to reconfigure the card.

ifconfig doesn't show the configuration of the card.

Hi,

does anyone knows how to configure a RTL8029 (AS) in 10baseT half duplex in MDK 10? I have trouble surfing the net with my cable modem, and i suppose that the default settings are for LAN...

Thanks in advance,

Félix

Doesnt seeem to be ethernet card driven problem though.
My card though has the CHIPSET REALTEK 8029(AS). It worked fine with all linux versions till MANDRAKE 9.1 turned up. Everything seemed fine, just that it didnt connect to the internet. ALways gave the same error, check hostname stuff, and only pinged its own IP, not even the GATEWAY.
On telneting gave host unreachable message.
After trying all things, I finally decided to tweak with MANDRAKE CONTROL CENTER.
Go to the device manager and then just configure the module of ur ethernet card. Set it debug level to 1. This mainly concerns changing the permission mod. And it works just fine, posting this immediately after fixing it 'coz I know how horrible it can be to work on LINUX without net. Have rebooted by comp more than 20 times, so as to be able to browse on WINDOWS and try to solve all these wierd problems

I tried setting the ethernet card to debug mode... and lo! it still doesnt work. dammit. I refuse to find another network card to put in it though, as this would be admitting defeat. And I know this card should work with linux :/
