Unhappy help needed

i want to enable ip forwarding automatically whenever i reboot my linux machine . i have put the following command in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
but it is not working . Secondly I want to make a virtual ethernet interface ie eth0:1 coz i have got only one NIC.
Can any linux guru tell me what files to modify to get the above settings permanent , so that these settings remain there even system is rebooted.
Thanks for your help in advance

# You need to run the firewall.conf fiel:

sh /root/firewall.conf # Assuming the file is in /

and the make the roles permanent:

/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S0iptables save # Red Hat

Then reboot and teh firewall should be active
