I'm using Red Hat 6.2 with kernal 2.2.14-6.1.1smp.
I'm using Sendmail 8.9.3/8.9.3. I can send and receive email using pine within the account. The main problem: on a windows email client I can send email but can not receive. I need to setup the windows email client to send and pick up mail ASAP.
I can type: telnet myserver 25
and use the commands available with no problem. But if I type:
telnet myserver 110
I get "Connection closed by foreign host.". It turns out I know a little more than the admin of this linux box but I need help. How do I allow remote access to a windows email client to send and receive email? Can the pop server and smtp be the same IP address and the same port (ie. myserver 25)?
The daemon imapd is not installed. The admin of this linux box was concerned about security, so he acceptted most of the defaults after setting up
networking.
Pine works fine sending and receiving email from within the user account. My windows email client
is using the correct smtp address but I don't think pop3 address was set up on the server.
I don't think the pop3 port was activated. What command do I use to find out the pop address for the server (other than asking the systems admin)?
the pop address?? erm... well the address of the server will still be it's name, as listed in the /etc/hosts file, ro how ever your system is configured.
the PORT of pop3 should be 110, use nmap to sacn the ports of the host to see if it's open or not.
How do I configure sendmail for POP/IMAP/... ?
You don't... primary purpose is to send and receive e-mail.(???)
It seems like a contradiction to me. I always thought the common MX addresses for setting up an email server (sendmail version) were pop.domainname.com and smtp.domainname.com. If sendmail doesn't do POP, then how can my Windows email client pickup (via pop) email from that linux user account?
Sendmail sends email, and recieves email - it doesn't FETCH email. That is the job of a POP or IMAP client. You need to run a POP or IMAP server to provide a pickup point.
Either that or run sendmail on your localmachine and use a client that can read standard mailboxes - Outlook can't.
