Help Me: Slow Download Performance

Hi,

I'm Mohammed Imran Khan from Karachi, Pakistan..

wel.. i've been using Linux for about the past 5 years....and recently i got a broad band connection (64K) . My problem is :

Browsing on the connection is fine but downloading is way too slow!..

I have had this problem with Mandrake, RH8, RH9 and Fedora Core 1 (currently using)

In Windows 9x/2k/XP I get constant download speeds of about 20-30K/s while in Linux , it starts with 30 K and degrades to 7K or less.

I tried a Linux Router Solution recommended in other forums...(My PC behind a Linux Router) but to no avail....same old problem.

I have a P4 2 GHz, 40GB HDD,DVD, 256MB RAM, MSI 845E MBoard, GEForce 2MX VGA and
RealTek 8139 NIC.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated..

Thanx in Advance

try some different mtu settings see if that will speed it up any. Also you could check for driver updates at realtek.

ifconfig eth0 mtu 1452

1452? Wouldn't you want to start at 1492?

I would guess 1460 is going to be the magic number, but 1452 is close enough.

I always thought it transfers 1500 by default but has to go down to 1492 because of the DSL headers.

One other thing mohammed_imran, could you check your /var/log/syslog for any anomalies. Specifically vj decompression errors.

If it's going through a nat router then I think there is another 40b header, The best thing to do is try it.

I setup my Linksys AP on a linksys router port connected to a Sat modem last week and the router needed to be set to 1460 to use outlook for sending mail.
