I am curious if anyone has had luck with gigabit cards in linux. We are a newspaper, which means running large pagination programs and graphic editors, and alot of network traffic! We have recently upgraded to gigabit, and will be getting a new linux server soon. We have already purchased a bunch of Netgear GA302t Gigabit cards, one of which will go in the linux server, provided linux will use it.
Anyone using linux on gigabit, and if so, are you using Netgear cards? In general, does Netgear and linux go pretty well?
Yea it uses the Tigon3 (tg3.o) module. It's a brodcom based card IIRC. If you want the fastest gigabit card for linux buy a Syskonnect (expecially if your running the card on a 64bit/66mhz bus). If your swich supports jumbo frames go with the syskonnect if you can (I'm not sure if tg3 supports jumbo frames or not).
For fiber, I use Syskonnect and Alteon, and lots of Intel 82544 cards on copper (those are usually integrated in the MoBo). No problems,, I can max out the gigabit speed, and a few networks are running Jumbo frames w/o problems. All the cards are supported by the kernel. I believe the Netgear card is supported by the tg3 driver as well, but I haven't used one myself.
