Gigabit ethernet and Redhat - any supported hardware?

(Is there a good choice of gigabit ethernet card for redhat?)

I recently tried in a naive way to upgrade my redhat 8.0 system to gigabit ethernet by buying a Linksys eg1032 card and plopping it in. I installed the drivers on the disk and they sort of worked, but the driver had unresolved symbols in it and that concerned me. When it finally ran I got about 12MB/s and then my raid died. So I immediately reverted to the old hardware for the rebuild and I'm a bit afraid of trying again.

I'd like to build a new system soon starting from scratch with FC5... Is there any well supported gigabit ethernet hardware for redhat?

thanks,
Pat

there was a LOT less gigabit ethernet about when rh8 (pile of junk) was out... you should have good success under fc5 as the drivers have come on a lot. the e1000 and tg3 drivers provide good support or their supported cards as two examples.

I am running a 3Com 10/100/1000 3C996-T 64Bit 66MHz PCI-X Server NIC. This is an older version of the card. The difference between it and the new ones is that it is a physically longer card (compared to the new ones) and the new ones use less power(more efficient). I got it on ebay for $20 with shipping. No problems on FC4 or FC5(tg3 driver if I remember correctly). Gigabit speed will make your drive speed the limiting factor (it will give your raid a good workout).

Here is a good read on how to dial in GigE: http://www.enterprisenetworkingplane...le.php/3485486

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. So if I read that correctly FC5 should have drivers for the Linksys eg1032 card?
That sounds like a good enough reason to upgrade (I was going to hold out until the next rebuild of the raid).

BTW, I bought a pair of D-Link DGS-2205 switches. Any opinion on whether those are ok? That was all they had at CompUSA

Anybody think that Linksys switches would perform much better?

thanks again,
Pat

I have been looking at the netgear Gs108 (eight port GigE $70 at NEwEgg) it is rated pretty high. The Plastic case netgears are not supposed to be very good. The D-Link DGS-2205 are fairly new (I think) and I have not seen much on them. The one review on NE was bad, but one review does not mean a lot. The Linksys switches developed after cisco bought them out(or any products) have suffered problems (I used to love Linksys).

Please report back how you like the D-links.

Good Luck
