Getting pcmcia and internel modem to both work

Hi everyone,
I've got an FIC 460 laptop with an internal 56k modem which I can get working with the ltmodem driver for my kernel and I've now bought a Xircom ethernet card.I installed M8.2 and it picked up my xircom no sweat but when I installed the modem drivers and tried to connect all I got was a connection but no actual interaction between the modem and the internet i.e. neither my browser or mail program would actually connect to a server - if you follow me.
Now i had set up the ethernet addresses and gateway etc - is this my problem?Does the pppd expect connection via the gateway i have set up rather than through the modem?Should I disable the xircom card and set up my default internet connection through the modem instead?
I got the card as I want to set up a home network but haven't found the time to do it yet so the modem is my first line of connection.
please excuse this garbled explanation as I know what i mean but fail to put it easily into coherent sentences.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Check your routing table 1st. See what M8.2 reckons is happening.
Type 'route -n' from a console window and see which entry has gw in it.
This is what M8.2 says is the default route, out of your machine.
Normally, there is an initialisation script which will remove this entry and replace it with the modem's ip address as the gw device.
Check your docs for this. pppd can be told to do this from the command line or you can do this yourself. Read 'man route' for details.

Regards,
Peter

Am I right in thinking you are suggesting using the noipdefault option for pppd?If so then where do I put it - via the console every time I run pppd or in a script or /etc/ppp/options?
