Gateway and route configuration

Are gateways meant to be configured at the level of a machine or an interface?

(i.e. What's the difference between configuring gateways in /etc/sysconfig/network and in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0?)

Also, are routes meant to be configured at the level of a machine or an interface?

(i.e. What's the difference between storing routes in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/static-routes and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-eth0?)

Thanks.

hi,

gateway used as per machine basis.
but routes - can be 1 routing table per routing protocol.
