I am having a strange network/firewall problem.
The following applications cannot connect to the internet: Firefox, Opera, and Thunderbird.
It seems to be a network problem.
But on the other hand, all kde apps can connect just fine.
I thought it was firestarter, as it looked similiar to when blocking port 80, so i unistalled it - nothing.
flushed all iptables- negatory!
uninstalled local Apache server, as i recently installed- nope.
Everything was working fine with the server and all, then about 4 days ago, this resulted. Although thats when i installed iplist- but even after its removal i cannot get internet access on non-native kde apps.
I restarted networking, and my system several times to no avail.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.04. I use Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9b5) Gecko/2008050509 Firefox/3.0b5), the Pan newsreader and Evolution email. I also use the pidgin IM package and Skype. All function normally.
Just some quick questions.
Did you recently do an Ubuntu update? I had serious problems with the updates in 7.10. Many of them failed to install properly.
Are you using a router? What kind?
Are you still using a firewall? .....Don't! They conflict with routers in many instances. You may wish to contact the routers manufacturer for information.
Are you using an Anti Virus program? If so I presume it's for email.
If you save your important information I'd suggest a a complete reformat and a fresh install.
Yes, I update about once a week, i'll take a look at the apt logs.
I use Airlink 101 430W router, The only setting i have been fiddling with as of late are port forwarding for my local Apache that i use in conjuction with Jinzora2 and Ampache to stream music to my phone.
Since i started my server i have become paranoid about security, so i'll try to disable all firewalls and see if the problem persists.
No Anti Virus program.
Yes, i have considered a fresh install and since i backup my home and etc directory regularly, i can just partition it and see how it goes. This is a last resort.
The problem is not all pages render efficiently on Konqueror and its a nuisance at best.
I should mention that Portable Firefox that i have on my usb works fine through wine- so i cant see where the problem lies.
ok, i currently using firefox 3 on wine- excellent as always but unstable on wine. crashes like once every 10 minutes! I dread having to reinstall my system. Im gonna try Etch next.
