Filesharing works in Win but not Linux...Networking settings?
I am connected to the internet through a router, but this has not been an issue up to now with windows (sorry). Now my windows has died mysteriously, so I am replacing it with linux for now. Unfortunately linux is giving me trouble.
I have tries SimplyMEPIS and Ubuntu with the same results, and I had similar problems years ago with Red Hat, Slackware, and a whole bunch of other distros...so I know it is a general linux thing...and probably a simply setting too.
So I have Ubuntu as my current distro, and I want to be able to use Apollon, eMule, Bittorrent, etc without having to change Router settings, because I know I shouldn't have too.
Any ideas? I think I understand what is happening, I just don't know how to fix it, but to keep options open and not confuse anyone, I will leave the question wide open, with no specifics...and later maybe I will elaborate based on replies.
first things first!!. install samba in your ubuntu
#apt-get install samba (put you cd in you cd-rom)
then configure it in each pc-their host name in share folder.
then check you eth0 or network card, see eth0 is active otherwise configure it.you can use www.ubuntuguide.org
fo your reference. i use ubuntu and knoppix all sharing their folder and internet with windows
"suffer to know all things should pass'"
Sorryfor not being clear, I don't mean that type of file sharing.
I want things like bittorrent and eMule to work. They work if I have a direct connection to the internet, but I am forced to go through a router, or I guess really it is setup as a gateway.
Windows versions of these programs work fine with this setup but in linux that isn't the case. As far as I can tell it is probably just a matter of what is sent out as my address, because I have the exact same program settings in Windows. Turning on Port forwarding on the Router is just stupid when I don't have too, especially since it requires an IP address to forward to and we are using dynamic DHCP because it is the only option available on the router. That means the programs with only work for a short time!
Does that make more sense? Due to the lack of responses, if someone reads this, could you please reply stating if you understand what I am trying to say.
