Fedora: Installing Network Card

I'm using Fedora Core 1 (Test 2 does not work...) and using P4P800 Deluxe M/B which has 3Com 3C940 network chip on-board. But I cannot get Fedora to recognize it. I have installed Kernel 2.4 and donwloaded the latest driver from ASUS followed the README. The last thing the readme tells me to do is

make load or insmod 3c2000.o

But what do I do then?
Help because I cannot connect to the internet on Linux unless I get this network card wroking cos im on school network... Cheers!

If that succeed, then you should see your network interface with ifconfig command. So you can configure it with the same command
For example:
Code:
ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:C9:18:DC:CA
          BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:10
this shows that your network card is OK but not configured and:
Code:
ifconfig eth0 inet 198.168.0.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255 up
ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:C9:18:DC:CA
          inet addr:198.168.0.100 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:10
will configure it and then with the previous comand show the result

Even if you get the 3C940/3C2000 driver installed, you will probably have problems accessing various web sites (e.g. Google). Search this forum for “3C940" and see how many people have had problems with the 3C2000 driver. I wasted a lot of time trying to get it installed. Eventually, I (and a lot of other people) gave up and used a driver from SysKonnect, which probably took me 10 minutes to install. It works great!

The SysKonnect sk98lin driver will run the 3com 3C940. The driver is already in the Fedora NIC list as “SysKonnect SK-98xx Gigabit”. On one system, I configured directly from the NIC list and on another system, I used the download from:

http://www.syskonnect.com/syskonnect...02_driver.html

If you need to download the driver, (1) select "Gigabit Ethernet", (2) select "SK-98xx Gigabit...", (3) scroll down and select "Linux Open Source", (4) read the "read me", (5) download the "InstallPackage" (install-624.tar.bz2) for kernel 2.4.13 and above and (6) follow the instructions for installing the driver as a module. For some reason, my copy of Mozilla couldn't download the InstallPackage, but MIE was able to download it without problems.

Installing the sk98lin driver as a module is very well explained, even for someone on their first day of using linux. The “read me” states that you need to have the kernel source loaded to install this package. It’s all explained in the “read me” file.

Good luck.

the problems you talk about with google

I found that disabling "Keep Alive" in mozilla HTTP config dialog box prevents this problem.
