Faxserver with CAPI (AVMB1) HyLaFaX, CUPS: no /dev/faxCAPI device

Hello all,

first: sorry for my English. its not very well (my native language is german).

I work with Gentoo Linux and I try to setup a faxserver on one machine in my little personal lan. I setup the hole hardware stuff well. the AVMB1 is recognized, the CAPI seems to be loaded (/proc/capi exist and /dev/capi, /dev/capi20 ist there). I DIDN'T start i4l because i thougt it is needless AND i don't want a ppp, which is mandatory with i4l (at least in gentoo). Anyway i am not sure anymore that i don't need it.

I install HyLaFaX and CAPI4HyLaFaX and configure it. HyLaFaX seems to recognize that it have to use CAPI as a modem. And I configure it that it suit my personal needs (MSN, etc.). but that is not relevant in the moment, because i get an error with CAPI (or HyLaFaX). There is the device /dev/faxCAPI missing. Even if I make a symlink /dev/faxCAPI --> /dev/capi20 (as was told in a suggestion i found in the net) it doesn't work. HyLaFaX needs this device (c2faxrecv whitch is a part of cap4HyLaFaX exits complaining there is no capi, and HyLaFaX-daemon produce the following error message in /var/log/daemon.log:

Jun 19 00:09:30 milou FaxQueuer[1527]: MODEM /dev/faxCAPI appears to be wedged
Jun 19 00:09:30 milou FaxQueuer[1527]: MODEM WEDGED: bin/wedged "faxCAPI" "/dev/faxCAPI"

after /usr/sbin/faxq (the HyLaFaX-Faxqueuer) starts.

though my questions:

do i need i4l? (i'll think, i'll try this too)
how do i correct the error with the missing /dev/faxCAPI? (I even don't know whitch software have to produce this device!)

thanks for helping, and have a nice day!
