Eth0 goes down after a few hours

Hello everyone,

I'm having a strange problem with my eth0 interface. Every few hours it loses its ip address or goes down completely. I have to do an ifdown followed by an ifup for it to start working again. This just started happening recently. I didn't change anything and tried rebooting. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Welcome to LQ!

Could you give us a little more info concerning your network setup?

-Linux distro and version
-Make and model of network card
-name of the module your NIC is using
-Physical network specs (direct connection to a cable/dsl modem, connecting through a hub/router, etc.)
-It sounds like you're using DHCP, yes? If so, where's your DHCP server? For that matter, hwo's your ISP?

In general, posting the contents of the folllowing files might help:
/etc/sysconfig/network
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

Sorry about that... here is some more info:

-Linux distro and version

Linux ppc 2.4.10
Macintosh 8600/300 Power PC

-Make and model of network card

eth0 is the built in ethernet on the motherboard.

-name of the module your NIC is using

not sure. how do I get that?

-Physical network specs (direct connection to a cable/dsl modem, connecting through a hub/router, etc.)

eth0 connected to cable modem directly. eth1 is a realtek pci NIC. I have set up IP masquerading. eth1 goes to my internal network.

-It sounds like you're using DHCP, yes? If so, where's your DHCP server? For that matter, hwo's your ISP?

Yes I am using DHCP. My ISP in Time Warner (Road Runner). Not sure where my DHCP server is?? how can I tell?

/etc/sysconfig/network :

HOSTNAME=rdu57-85-092.nc.rr.com
NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4=no
GATEWAYDEV=
GATEWAY=

(I realize the HOSTNAME is incorrect here. Mine has changed as the ip changes.)

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 :

DEVICE=eth0
USERCTL=no
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
BROADCAST=192.168.0.255
NETWORK=192.168.0.0
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
IPADDR=

Let me know if there is anything else. Thanks guys
