Thanks for the response Finlay. As mentioned before, for the 2.4 kernel compilation, I've tried the default tg3 driver (as module or builtin), and the broadcom bcm5700 driver (also both ways). Even tried adding a secondary NIC (intel epro/100) but it did the same - just no traffic with that miserable error.
