enabling telnet


How do I enable telnet on my linux box and how do I ensure that it is always on

don't use telnet, use ssh instead.

if for some sick and wrong reason you need telnet, install the package suitable for your unnamed distribution and (probably) edit /etc/xinetd.d/telnet to enable it.

anything that does not use an encryption protocol is unsecure. telnet does not.

on the outside, ssh and telnet are basically identical (meaning you can do all the same things) -- except ssh uses a security protocol.

download and install sshd and be done with it.

i can sit on a network, between your client and the server you connect to. I can use wireshark or any other tcp analysis tool and see every single key your press in plain text on the screen in front of me. i can see your username, i can see your password, i can see the output of every command you ran. this is not me doing anything celver whatsoever. no hacking, no decryption, just using any number of valuable network tools to read plaintext data on a wire.
