Easy/Cheap way to transfer files between RH9 and Win2k?
I want to transfer files from my Win2k system over to my new RH9 Linux system. I'm not well versed in networking, so I need help understanding how to do everything. It's not that I'm not good with computers, it's just that I'm not a networking guy. Every time I try to do something with networking, it goes right over my head.
I've been told to use Samba. But I've only gotten Samba server to work on my RH9 machine (told it what folder to share), but can't figure out the Win2k part.
Also, if anybody can tell me how to allow disk write access for non-root users outside of their own home folders, that would be cool as well. I have an XMMS MP3 archive seperate from the non-root user (in the base folder), but I can't download anything to it without being logged in as root.
Sorry this wont be much help but may point you in the correct direction, but I believe you will need a registry edit to get it working. I don't know what it is but you could try the .... M$ newsgroups.
you do not need any registry edits (which would have been the enableplaintextpassword key) just set "secure passwords = yes" in your smb.conf but that won't be needed if you are to transfer FROM win2k, as you'd just plain be using the smbclient and smbmount programs, so wouldn't involve editing any configs.
as for changing attributes, look as the manpage for chmod
Well how about this: how would I go along just making the directories I want into virtual drives on my Win2K (pro) system. I need to make 2 because the files will be in two seperate folders (drives actually).
And I still would like help to allow users write access to certain root (not root user) folders.
