DSL 3c900B recognised but doesn't work

I am using DamnSmallLinux (damnsmalllinux - dot- org) on a 486 PC with 3c900-TP0 ethernet card and genius serial mouse.
The network card IS recognised, but does NOT function;
Below follow output of a number of commands I tried to debug the system.

$ netcardconfig
yields: sending DHCP broadcast from device eth0Operation failed (my router/switch does use DHCP for sure)

$cat /proc/pci
yields: --bus 0, device 15, function 0; -ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c900b-TP0... IRQ 9;

$ cat /proc/ioports -
yields: ... 6000-607f : 3Com Corporation 3c900b-TP0 ....

$cat /proc/interrupts
yields: 0=timer; 1=keyboard; 2=cascade; 8=rtc; 14=ide;

$ lsmod
gives that module 3c59x is loaded

I am totally stuck,
who can help me???
