Down Network interface stills answers ping!

Hello

i have a server with 2 ethernet cards
configured with ips eth0 10.34.140.60 and eth1 10.34.140.61
The weird problem is that if i disable eth1 with ifconfig eth1 down, i can still
do a ping from another virtual machine or physical server to the ip address of eth1 10.34.140.61!!!
I have checked with ifconfig that eth1 is NOT up.
Does anybody has a clue of what is going on?
is there anyway to completely disable a network interface under linux, or something like unplumb like solaris?

Thanks.

I'm not sure what distro you are running....but try shutting down networking
/etc/init.d/network or networking stop
