Hello all,
I have 2 machines running RH 7.0, one is the web server and the other the DNS server. I finally have the dns working and I am able to access the websites I have on the webserver through their url name. My problem that the host names and urls resolve on all the machines except the DNS server itself, in a way. I used host and nslookup on the server and it does resolve the names to ip address and vice versa, but when I try to ping the host name or tyr to access the sites on the other machine, the machine can not find the host. All the other machines can resolve names and can ping and access the web server except the DNS server. WHat's going on with my DNS server? Any suggestions are well appreciated.
The domain to the network is bravonline.com so I modified the resolv.conf as the following (which was the way it should be done according to various sources):
search bravonline.com
nameserver 127.0.0.1
If there something wrong with this setup, or is there something else I need to add? Any help would be greatful

1. Try to ping the webserver with its ip (are they well connected ?)
2. restart your dns server
3. Look at your syslogs if bind didn't create any error logs
4. try to ping the web server but use fqdn (ping webserver.mydomain.com) if it works add search mydomain.com in /etc/resolv.conf
5. check a file called something like /etc/host or /etc/hosts i don't remember, it specify if it has to use a local host file first or the dns server.
...to me your dns configuration has a problem. (in your zone file)
After doing some more searching for the answer to this elusive problem, I checked dig against a couple of other names that I guess I haven't tried before. Using the host program, everything works fine, either with hostname to ip or ip to hostname. When I use dig, dig will only work if I type in the full name of the machine I am checking (dino.bravonline.com), but will give me the SERVFAIL message if I type in just the hostname (dino). Like I said before, I can ping to every machine from any machine on the dns network except from the dns server. The DNS server can reolve the names and ip addresses, but can not ping to the FQDN or host name of any machine on the network? What is dig trying to tell me? Any help would be well-received.
Miky,
I can ping the webserver and all the other machines by ip address. The named daemon does start smoothly at startup. I have added search bravonline.com to the resolv.conf file and the localhost ipaddress of the server 127.0.0.1. Still no avail. Dig still gives a SERVFAIL when looking up just the host name. Is there any other thing that may cause this typr of problem? Thanks for everything.
Hy jose_bravo:
I think that all is ok. If we read dig manual:
Code:
+[no]search
Use [do not use] the search list defined by the searchlist or domain directive in resolv.conf (if any). The
search list is not used by default.
we see that the search list is not being used. If you execute, par example:
