hello,
i want to know whether there are good enough diskless workstation softwares,
apart from citrix and ltsp/nfs. and, is it possible that i use linux as server, but
the dummy clients use windows?
In theory you could set up a Linux server install severall WindowsXP Virtuall Machiens with eg Vmware, then you could use Linux live Cd to boot the diskless clients and connect to the virtual machiens on the Server, should work but i am not sure if it is what you want
hi, thanks for the answer,
i'm interested in that "theory", could it be possible that way?
do you have any reference about it,
thank you in advance,
efm
a) powerfull server that includes:
- lots of memory: 512MB Ram for Linux and min 128 MB Ram for each Virtuall Machien
- lots of harddisk space: min 5GB for each Virtuall Machien preferrable on differnt disk(s)
b) VMware workstation 5
c) Windows OS plus licenses and software plus licenses( why not use linux for clients?)
d) A Bootable Linux live CD for each diskless client such as Slax_live
e) All diskless clients connected to the server (LAN)
I have ever used a P4 with 512MB Ram running Suse and vmware 5 as a server to host 3 windows xp virtuall computers simoultaniously, but I have never actually tried the above
hi,
btw, how can each client connects to each virtual workstation in server?
is it possible that the client connects to any virtual workstation in server at startup?
i'm trying pxes right now, although it still doesn't working, and i like the concept
thank you,
efm
Ive only used PXE with RIS on W2k Server. Use a client such as rdesktop to connect to the virtual machiens and write a script that automates the process everytime u boot the diskless workstation. If PXE fails, that script would need to be on the boot live CD, which am sure is possible.
thank you for the answer,
i will try that rdesktop,
btw, i'm using pxes right now, and it uses a live cd also,
do you think it's possible to copy the content of the livecd to harddisk so
i can boot from harddisk instead?
btw, is rdesktop the same as krdc or vnc?
I found that when using krdc or even vnc to connect to a windows machien, i experienced many inconveinces such a keybord input being not correctly displayed; when u type "inux"it might end up being displayed as lllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnxxxxxxxx.
Quote from rdesktop's site:
"rdesktop is an open source client for Windows NT Terminal Server and Windows 2000/2003 Terminal Services, capable of natively speaking Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in order to present the user's NT desktop. Unlike Citrix ICA, no server extensions are required"
