Dialup dropout problems

I am running Fedora 7 and have a problem with dialup networking. I use the modem lights applet for GNOME, which is simply a frontend to the ifup command. I have set up my connection to redial if it is dropped but this is where my problem is, my system seems completely oblivious to the connection being dropped and still reports it as active, even when the modem itself reports that there is no connection. This is very irritating for me as sometimes a connection will be dropped after only a few minutes
