Dialup Connection Problem

I am attempting to set up a dial up connection on a laptop, but i'm having a few difficulties.

The modem is a Zoom external serial 56k, the modem is connecting to the serial port properly. Every time i run kppp it just tries to connect and crashes, so i'm trying with minicom to see if i can identify the problem.

If i fire minicom up, it initializes the modem, then presents me with a prompt.

The first thing i type in is
Code:
AT+GCI=B4
this is to set the modem up for the uk

Next thing, if i try to dial an isp
Code:
ATDT08451232000
it simply says no dial tone and stops, so if i tell it to dial without waiting for a dial tone
Code:
AT&FX1DT08451232000
it dials and immediately says no carrier.

I'm sure its just some command i need to pass, ive tried X0, X1, X2 and X4 but none of them make any difference.

If it makes any difference im running on Slackware 12.1 with a 2.6.25.3 kernel.

Thanks

You should type in ATZ first to reset the modem. Then type in AT+GCI=B4.

If that doesn't work then the problem is likely to be with the phone cord. Take the phone cord out of the Zoom modem and plug it into a telephone. Do you get a carrier and a dial tone on the telephone?

I've tried typing in ATZ first but i still get the same result.

I have managed to force it to detect a carrier, by dialing the isp from the phone plugged into the modem then typing ATA, so i know that the modem is (sort of) working correctly.

The cable is ok as it is from a working phone.

I think i need to play around with the registers to make it wait longer for the carrier.
