Try "service network restart" or "ifdown eth0" and then "ifup eth0"
Of course, be in root.
Or if you really want to see what's going on, dissect all the scripts related to network-functions. Try grepping for everything in your /etc directory for the string "dhcp". That'll take a while but if you dissect every file that has the word "dhcp" in it, you'll figure it out.
if you have dhcpclient you don't need to do anything but starting pump or dhcpcd (which isn't as good as pump)
so don't bother with startup scripts
do
pump -i ethx
or pump -k to kill it
and ifcfg-eth0
should only have entry for
BOOTOROTO=dhcp
and ONBOOT=yes
i dont use any startup scripts for pump, i tried ifdown eth0 then ifup eth0 lastnight and it just droped the ip i had and failed so i had to do a full restart. i also tried the other stuff.. it's like it cant find the dhcp server but yet it does after doing a full reboot. i edited the ifcfg-eth0 and took out the other stuff but i doubt thats what it was.. so does anyone have any idea?
oh.. and when i run top pump is loaded but i dont start it. i guess it's saposed to load. i dont know much about this dhcp stuff sence this is the first time i have ever had to use it. stupid cox.
oh.. and i have not installed anything but pump, so dhcpclient is not installed. didnt know i needed it, i was going by something i was reading. tho it didnt seem to be much help..
I am wondering too, just to compare, in Windows I used to do a "release all, renew all" in winipcfg. If anyone knows what that means, and knows how to do the same thing linux, please tell us.
