Connection timeout on Centos 5.6 from Windows XP using PuTty

I searched the forums using "PuTty 'CentOs 5.6'", but did not get a hit.

This is a relative new installation of CentOs 5.6, installed last week. When I attempt to use PuTty from Windows XP using the Hostname for the CentOs system I get a "Connection timed out" error. However, if I use the IP address for the CentOs machine I can PuTty into it with no difficulty. (Infact I'm in a FireFox window on CentOs writing this.)

I cannot ping the hostname, but I can ping the IP address.

Did you add an entry for it in your DNS server?

If not, or if you do not *have* a DNS server, you can add the IP and Hostname to your hosts file. That will work.

The hostname is in the /etc/hostname file, and when I look at the System->Administration->Network settings I see that

Hostname is set to the proper value.
Primary DNS is a valid IP
Secondary DNS is a valid IP
DNS search path is the domain name that we use.

Sounds correct.. but having the name in the Centos /etc/hosts file, will not allow the Windows machine to read that hostname.

You have to add the IP and hostname to the Windows XP hosts file @ \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (Apologies if that is wrong, but its definately close to the correct path)

Or are you implying that you have in fact added the IP and hostname to a real DNS server?

I've added to what I have access, which means the hosts file on my XP machine and Hosts and Hostname on the CentOs machine. I added the IP address and hostname of the CentOs machine on the XP, and in the CentOs machines hosts and hostname files I've added an IP address and the DNS that we use. I do know that adding the IP and name to my XP box's hosts file does work, but as soon as I boot the CentOs machine that IP address can change.
