Communicating to a proxy server

I am clueless on this one considering I don't have much networking skills (especially dealing with routing). Here is my problem:

I have a proxy server running on a Windows box connected to the internet. I then have my Linux box and Windoze box on a LAN via a netgear switch.

I can configure Opera & Konqueror to talk to the Proxy server via their configuration options. My problem is getting programs like BitchX working and communicating through my proxy server. Anybody know how?

I have the strong feeling that I have to mess with the route table (via route) but I'm not quite sure due to my lack of experience.

I'd appreciate any advice/insight.

TIA

doesnt any of the programs have proxy settings? hmmmm... if it were a Linux proxy I would add IP masquerading or NAT for anything not going through the proxy. I dont know how to setup masquerading or NAT on a windows machine though.

If it absolutley had to go through the proxy wouldnt he have to use a transparent proxy? That would redirect traffic coming out of your LAN to port 80 and redirect it to the proxy port, so the LAN doesnt know it is using a proxy??

The windows box has the internet connection? if so you need to setup routing on that box to get non-proxyed connections out.

Thanks for the replies guys.. I eventually got it working. I really didn't mess with anything on the lower level. As a matter of fact, I downloaded and used XChat (rather than BitchX) due to proxy configurations built in. After I set up XChat to talk to the proxy server, everything else started working including BitchX. Anyone have any idea why? I mean, it's obvious that XChat modified something that allowed everything else to work. But what did it modify or add?

Thanks
