Common Network Login for Linux?

Hey all,

I'm looking for reading material to setup a common login for a bunch of linux boxes. I want a parallel of what happens in a windows domain with LDAP where each machine is independent (maybe even different distros) but when you login, it is verified by a central server and maybe would even mount my network share (on the same server) regardless of which machine I logged into.

Or do I just have to set each machine up and then by hand make all the users for me the same password and mountpoints to the network share?

Mostly I'm just bored and thought I'd make a project for myself...

Thanks!

Isn't this what NIS is for?

NIS, that's a good term for me to google... I'm no network admin, just a hobbyist. I've moved up to "average" with my combined linux/windows networking and so I'm a little weak on the terminology.

Thanks, I'll try some more googling!
