change name on a network

I have set up a small debian box to run http, ftp and ssh (internal on a network). i made the mistake of setting the name on it to "test2" (i had to reinstall once after a complete mess up). ive managed to get everything sorteed except i want to access the box from a web browser by ithe name "rockhopper" however at the moment it is still "test2".

i tried following a guide here:
http://www.cpqlinux.com/hostname.html

rebooted the computer, and it is still seen as test 2 :-(

config files+++++
/proc/sys/kernel/hostname
Code:
rockhopper
/etc/hosts
Code:
127.0.0.1	rockhopper.internal.rochester-college.org localhost.localdomain	localhost	rockhopper

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1     ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
-aditional
the DHCP/wins server is a M$ windows 2003 with AD

What is the content of /etc/HOSTNAME ?

Also maybe the dhcp server kept the IP and hotsname with
the mac address of your machine, you may have to wait until
some dhcp refresh/update to take the change in account

Firstly, make sure /etc/hostname says rockhopper. Secondly, make sure you're running dhcpcd. Once you have that done, make /etc/network/interfaces have lines like:

iface eth0 inet dhcp
hostname rockhopper

Then do

ifdown eth0
killall dhclient

assuming you were using dhclient. After that run

ifup eth0

and the DHCP hostname should magically be updated. Give it a try and let me know if it works.
