I am ok with networking, but newbie with linux, please help me out, thanks.
I have a winxp box with a onboard lan, works fine.
I have a linux box with a lan card/switch-card combo and it works fine.
The two machines connect fine. I can access the net from linux easy thru the windows box which has the modem.
I have the server installation of apache version 2, the installation of php which works, and mysql(havent tried it yet) i can see the default info setup file when i go h t t p:/ /l ocalhost/ fine.
I can also see it when i go 127.0.0.1 . What im asking is how can i change the ip of my linux box to something like 192.168.xxx.xxx so i can access the server from my windows box.
I played round with the setup without any luck.
Its a fresh install of redhat 9. today cause i thought i would do it to try again.
Thanks.
Once i can get this resolved i have other issues also. lol
run "ifconfig" under linux and that will tell you the IP address you have. if you are successfully browing the web you will already have a suitable IP to connect to.
I dont understand what you mean.
I went to linux, went run, ifconfig. nothing happened.
I want to be able to from windows type the linux box's ip and see whats on the server. When i type the ip 127.0.0.1 i redirected to the windows box, as its ip is default to 127.0.0.1 also. (terminal ping localhost) i get that address. How can i change it to something else.
I dont think having a connection to the net is neccessary at this stage, (it does originate from the xp box) i wish to use this for testing php locally.
127.0.0.1 is always yourself, aka localhost. And 192.168.x.x are always private network addresses iirc, not world accessable. Try reading up on tcp/ip and networking a bit maybe?
ok, so where do i go to tell linux what ip it is to accept connections on. cause i cant connect to it via 127.0.0.1 from my other machine. obviously. thanks for pointing that out.
what do i need to do then ? i tried telling apache config to listen on 192.168.0.8 (for example) then i went to services. restarted it and it said it could not bind the ip and initialize.
what do i have to do to be able to see the apache host dir from my other windows xp networked machine ! ?
