Please help,

I'm a real linux newbie but I know windows well. I've recently installed RH 7.2 and I can't access the server from any of my windows (XP or 2000) boxes. I can't even ping it by name or number.

Everything else seems to be working fine. I'm on a home network with a gateway and the linux box connects fine to the gateway (I'm using it to compose this). I can even see the linux box entry in my network listing on the windows boxes but can't access it (with samba running) and can't even ping it.

Also, I can ping the windows machines from linux just fine.

Well I've managed to get ping up and running for three seconds by turning off the firewall (I think) or by enabling the echo and echo.udp lines in xinetd.d

Turning off the firewall was problematic. I'm not sure what's happening but when I run gnome-lokkit (the program rh tells you to run) it gets to a point where it is checking mail and then it errors out and sits forever at a checking mail prompt (which I can close but nothing is said - did it work? who knows).

Anyway, after this I did a ipchains -F to refresh the firewall and now I can't ping anymore. What's going on here? As far as I can tell I've disabled the firewall and enabled the echo stuff but nothing seems to work right.

This stuff could be easier.

yeh u definately have a firewall problem.

since ping uses ICMP u have a firewall rule that blocks icmp messages.

Try ftp or telnet application on the linux box ( ie ; telnet or ftp from the win machine .... and see the response )

disable the firewall scriptr from one of your startup scripts and restart the linux box.

Alright, I've reinstalled with no firewall and here's the symptom:

if I run tcpdump on the server Samba works fine. If I don't run tcpdump then I can't connect to the linux box.

Also, trying to run VncClient on a winxp box is frustrating. It can connect (usually) but then

a) I get a DCOPserver failure and can't run anything from KDE

b) If I exit it doesn't do this cleanly and I have to manually restart the vncserver

c) If I logout of KDE I get a blank screen that requires closing the client and restarting KDE manually at the server and restarting vncserver

Any ideas what's going on here? This is extremely frustrating.

Now iam not a security expert but it is baffling to know that
SAMBA should not work until tcpdump is running ( i guess u mean that while u were capturing packets ?)

Are u running tcpdump in promiscuous mode ?
Try switching it off and check .

Try using the tcpdump-smb utility ( although i have never used it myself ).
