canīt ping my linux box by its name :(


Iīve probably misconfigured all my "config" files trying to fix that...

I just canīt

ping mylinuxmachine
from a windows machine in the same LAN

I read that samba is necessary for this... Iīm really not a total noob, but plz, can someone help me in a dumb-ass proof style??

You need to put the IP address and the machine name in the hosts file on the windows box.

e.g., 192.168.1.1 yourmachine

Use the find doodad to locate it

The file you are looking for is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Yea if you run Samba(or more precisely the netbios daemon "nmbd"), Windows hosts will be able to find your Linux box by its hostname, which by default is the netbios name.
Many distros have Samba preconfigured, you might just try running "nmbd -D"
