Installed!
Now rpm -qa | grep telnet returns:
telnet-server-krb5-1.2.7-1mdk

Now, I'm lost. What's the command to start up/shut down the telnet server?

i think it should put it in /etc/xinetd.d

go to that directory and if there is a telnet file open it and there should be a line saying

disable = yes

change that to

disable = no

and then do

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart

Okay, did it. telnet enabled and xinetd restarted. Now, the telnet session hangs for 5-10 seconds then ends when I try to connect.

telnet 127.0.0.1 works

telnet 192.168.1.55 produces
Trying 192.168.1.55...
Connected to mikesbox.mikesdesk.org (192.168.1.55).
Excape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

goto '/etc/hosts.deny'

there should be a line like

ALL:DENY ALL except 127.0.0.1

comment out that line and restart the xinetd service with the command from the previous post and try connecting now.

chkconfig telnet on

Just to reinforce what manthram said - you would be better with ssh:
