can ping but i cant connect

ok i just got comcast setup and when i activate the nic it gives me a ip through dhcp and it changed my hostname and added the dns servers to my /etc/resolv.conf file but when i ping it says

PING google.com (216.239.37.99) 56(84) bytes of data

but it doesnt do anything after that
i have no firewall active so i dont know what is wrong unless it is interfearing with my ppp conection that i have set up
