if all this fails, do this:

#/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.200 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255


change the IP to match your network (like 192.168.0.200 or 10.0.10.X or whatever) and change the broadcast to match also.
