I'm a newbie to linux, Ive only had it for a week. I can't get on the internet and I dont have windows installed as a second operating system. Im writing this from a different computer i have at my house.
I have a router connected to the computer but can't install it. I have another router upstairs that is supposed to send internet down to the one I have with my linux computer but I can't install the router with my linux computer.
In general, you shouldn't need to install anything to make Linux work with a router. Do you have DHCP on your network? If you do, so long as Mepis detects and sets up your Ethernet card correctly then it should obtain an IP address and other network setting via DHCP and it should "just work." Is this how your setup works? If so and it's not working you need to check if the downstairs router really is getting a connection from the upstairs one. Do other computers on this router have net access?
Also, I'm assuming this is a wired connection from the computer to the router ... is that correct? More details about your network setup (what connections are wired, how many other computers are hooked up, where your connection the net is located, etc.) would help troubleshoot this.
I think I have DHCP.
The router is supposed to be set up through a cd.
The downstairs router is getting a connection.
The only other computer on the routers is a laptop.(The reason why I have a router up and downstairs, best connectivity.)
The computer is connected to the router.
I only have the one mepis operated system connected to my downstairs router in port one.
