can't find linux ip address

Hi, I have a workstation (XP-Pro) running software that connects to a linux server (in process of rebuild) and the client cannot see the ip. I get an error that the address cannot be found. I tried this similarly with a bogus address and got the same result. The XP box and the server are connected via an unmanaged switch. I have a static ip set on the box with the correct mask. When I try to ping the box I get: Negotiating IP security

I ran ifconfig -a on the linux box (Redhat 7.0)
I see the correct ip address listed under ifcfg-eth0

Is there any place that I may still need to configure in /etc that I am forgetting? Any guidance or help would be appreciated.

THanks!!!
Mariam

well that's just configuration files, it doesn't mean that your network is actually up.... the output of "ifconfig eth0" should show the ip address... try pinging it from the same machine.

can ping ifconfig successful

Hi and thanks for your suggestion. I did a ifconfig eth0 and I got the correct ip address. I tried pinging from within the linux box and got replies.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

IP address

Can anyone give me a short explanation of why I get different IP addresses between ifconfig eth0, and whatismyip dot com? Is it related to my DSL router?

Thanks.

The IP address you get from whatismyip.com is your internet IP address.

The IP address you get with ifconfig is your IP address in your local network (usually in the range of 192.168.*.* or 10.*.*.*).

As the DSL router is the one who creates the connection to your internet service provider, it is the only device which knows your internet IP.

The DSL router will do an address conversion from the local IP to/from the internet IP (network address translation, NAT), if you access the internet.

And yes, there will be problems if an application needs your "internet" address, but only gets you local IP address from the operating system.

IP address

Vimico,

Thanks for the clarification. I had an idea about it, but wasn't sure where the addresses were being generated.
