BOGUS.username.xxxx *Emergency*

I was working on a mail server that has uw-imap and postfix 2.1.5

The are files in /var/mail/username that contains emails, problem is I was trying to add virtual domains to the server and it renamed one of the files username to BOGUS.username.5DAB.

Now the user has lost all his emails that are in his inbox,

how can I recover these emails?

To make things more difficult emails are still being delivered to a new username file. Which means that I need to merge the two someone...

Anyone know how?

Ok,

I figured it out (talk about stress!)

I did the following:

1. postfix stop
2. /etc/init.d/inetd stop (for uwimap)
3. backed up both username and BOGUS.username.XXXX
4. cat BOGUS.username.XXXX >> username
5. postfix start
6. /etc/init.d/inetd start

This resolved the issue, it took a long time to reconnect to the inbox the first time going back on because there is like 1200 messages in the file.

But it worked,

hope this helps someone else.

What went wrong

Looks like it's not the virtual domains that messed it up, it's when i changed the permissions. Looks like, in my case, that it is prefered that the owner of the file be the user whose mail it is and the group, in my case, be mail.

Anyone know how to have postfix automatically create directories in /var/mail/ as needed for virtual domains?

Thanks,

David
