BIND Problems, please help!

Hi everyone, I have a Mandrake 10.0 machine with BIND installed.

I have followed the DNS how to located at http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc.../DNS-HOWTO.pdf
and found it very useful.

I have performed the dig -x 127.0.0.1 command and get everything as the how to says I need.

But when I run nslookup on the Windows clients :

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.250: Timed out
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.251: Timed out
DNS request timed out.
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.250

What have I done wrong?

Please help.

Regards,
Dane

Based on the above error you posted - it looks like nslookup is unable to get the rDNS name for IP 192.168.1.250.

1) Did you load the reverse lookup zones for your network when you configured BIND?
2) If so, does dig -x 192.168.1.250 return the rDNS name?

The howto document you referenced in your first post had a chapter on how to add reverse lookup zones (I actually looked at a few of the chapters) Please try the instructions in this chapter for adding reverse lookup zones. If you have any specific questions/problems with the howto instructions, please post back. I'll be glad to help.

Sorry I read that how to again and just can't understand it, I know a bit about DNS I just can't understand this doco.........

192.168.1.250 is the IP address of the Linux machine that I have DNS running on.

I am trying to run nslookup on my Windows XP client and I get ;

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.250: No response from server
DNS request timed out.

I have the default config for named that has the root zone and the 127.0.0 which has the reverse zone already entered (as per default)

I also selected "mandrake.coastal.com.au" as my machines full domain name as thats how I wanted it set up when I got DNS going

I tried reading the DNS HOW-TO but couldn't get my head around it. I have been using webmin to do what I have done so far and I find that a lot more practical than manually modifying configs

I am very new to Linux but I am doing a course in networking at university so I know the basics just can't understand how to apply them to this.

Please help as it is all appreciated

1. make ping 192.168.1.250 from windowsXP machine
2. check what bind is listen on network interface
netstat -an|grep 53
You must get like this
tcp 0 0 172.20.8.5.53 *.* LISTEN
udp 0 0 172.20.8.5.53 *.*
3. check mandrake firewall.
Sorry, Im not familiar with mandrake.
