balance bandwidth between computers on network

This is for about 5 computers behind a Slackware gateway. I want to keep any one user from using all the bandwidth. Example:

Computer1 starts a large file transfer with scp...Computer4 tries to log in to a website but it times out because it is moving too slow.

So I need to balance even if they are using different protocols...ftp, http, ssh, etc.

I know this must be a common issue, but I can't seem to find the right info. I don't mind reading if I can figure out the right search terms /programs to look for.

Thanks

Are all the machines running linux ?

If they do and you have control over them, install wondershaper on each of them.

If you are talking about bandwidth throttling managed at the your linux gw, I have no clue and would be interested to know more about that aswell.

If you want to limit on your gateway i recommend looking at http://lartc.org/ for routing trafic shaping prioritizing and more
Enjoy !

Ps. Trafic shaping using htb ( htb3 ) look it up
Ps2 if you don`t really wanna get your hands that dirty try searching htb tools on google
