What did you call the file and where did you put it?

What do the following directives say in the apache config:
DirectoryIndex
DocumentRoot

Hi thanks for your reponse

The DocumentRoot says: DocumentRoot/var/www/html

The DirectoryIndex says: DircetoryIndex index.html index.php index.php3 index.shtml index.cgi index.pl index.htm Default.htm default.htm

The name and place of the file I wanted to use I think was

Location:/var/www/html I'm not sure what the name is anymore but I think it's the same www.html

DirectoryIndex controls the files that are looked for when you access a dirctory such as http://yourhost.com/ or http://yourhost.com/downloads/

Apache will look to return the file called index.html - if it can' find that it tries index.php and so on.

Therefore if you access http://yourhost.com/ then apache will look for the index.html page first. Call your first page index.html and save it in /var/www/html/

I created another file and named it index.html and saved it where you suggested. After restarting apache I typed my address and got an "unauthorized message." I did save my orginal page and later replaced the new file with old and that worked fine with the exception of the icons, those are no longer viewable. Sorry for being such a pain in the ass I'm sure these questions seem like childs play to you guys, but as always any help is appreciated. Thx

make sure that the page is readable by apache and the directory is executeble by the apache users and or group - these are both usually "apache" you can find out by looking in httpd.conf
