An RPC error occured

I am struggling to set up an NFS network between an Madrake 10.1 and a Mandriva 2006 x86-64 system. I have set the 2006 sytem as the host and /etc/exports contains a line to export /home to the other machine with insecure and rw options. I had to use "insecure" because the ports used exceed the secure numbers. Now I can see the NFS share in the client machine and I seem to be able to browse it. However it is very flaky and frequently reports and "Connection to host An RPC error occured, is broken". The hosts.alloe and hosts.deny are both empty. The samba and fish connections appear to work OK, but I haven't tested them fully.

Any help would be appreciated.

PS Why is NFS so difficult to set up?
