How would you go about using a diffrent hw address for an ethernet card. I can do IP aliasing - so I tried:
ifconfig eth0:0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
and got a:
SIOCSIFHWADDR: Device or resource busy
The cable modem provider uses the mac address to verify. I am setting up a Linux router - and I'm not ready to pull out the ehternet card from my other working computer yet. As I want to test every thing out first.
I've looked/sweated over the Adv routing, Ethernet, IP Masquerading Howto's but haven seen this subject. So far its taken me about 2 weeks to get where I'm at: RedHat 7.2, 2 3Com Ethernet III cards, iptables with masquerading.
When I configured my virtual IP address, this is how i did it:
- create a file named ifcfg-eth0:1 in your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts directory;
- write this in that file:
DEVICE=eth0:1
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=static
# here you should make some adjustments
IPADDR=192.168.1.1
# here too
NETMASK=255.255.255.224
# and here
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1

I was able to setup an ifcfg-eth0:1 file.
I included the "HWADDR=" tag and put a fake mac address to it.
restarted the Network and ran ifconfig:
But it ignored my fake mac address and used the real one.
I don't think that I can spoof my mac address using this method.
