Hey Guys!
I'm in the process of recreating my home network. I have 4 computers in total 2 Gentoo workstations, 1 Gentoo server and 1 OpenBSD server.
The Gentoo server is PIII 500MHz/128MB RAM and the OpenBSD server is PII 300MHz/64MB. My cable internet connection is shared using a linksys WRT54G.
The services I plan to run are NFS, NIS, Apache, Postfix, and IMAP. My query is which server should host what? My network only has 4 users receiving very little email. Apache is used mainly for our intranet.
Also on which host should I run snort?

This is my opinion and as u well aware each person has different ways in working. I would place the Apache / Postfix / IMAP on the PIII machine as it would be better to have a more powerfull machine just in case the access gets heavy on the HTTP service but that is not the main reason. Running a service like NFS and NIS these are services that should not be facing the big bad world like the internet as u are lokking for serious trouble if u do this. There are many know exploits for the RPC services that run on NFS and NIS at for that reason alone I would consider in running these services on the PII machine.
