2 problems W/ kanotics linux, urgent ,does'nt install next to exsisting partitions

Hi Everyone , I'm new somewhat , I like my ubuntu 6.6 my pcmcia cards come on without drivers . I use 2wire orinoco and d-link g650 airplus extreme.. I tried to install Kanotics next to an exsisting ubuntu 6.6 on a toughbook cf-48. I went through the process of creating a partition to install it on and it completly chose to install right over the top of my ubuntu OS .I also have Kubuntu 6.10 that I would like to check out , but I'm affaid of wiping out a stable install...Once kanotics was installed the pcmcia cards did'nt even blink and kanotics did'nt see it .Ubuntu see's them with no problem....Any one out there with the same <install> and < networking problems> with these 2 dist's.<linux Kanotix> & <Kubuntu 6.10 >. Please any feedback would be helpful.. Thank you...

sounds like you may have made a bad choice in the install process. Most all Distros will not automatically assume that you want NOT to install over other distro's . . . that is to say that you need to make sure that the # partition(hda6 . . .or whatever) is specified. Even if you made a new partition, you need to make sure of where you are installing because the partition process is not directly related to the install, just a helper tool to get you where you need to go. I'm guessing that when the install specified where it was going to install to, you just figured that you took care of it in the partition phase and didn't look too closely at the partition #. Please let me/us know what happens when you do this again. I'll try it myself if it blows up on you again.

Thumbs up Thank you on the install info..

Thank you for the rapid response.. I have found out the hardway of course that you can install linux dist's. to dual boot in grub only if one of the OS"s are not a linux dist., I was told one can't just install 2 linux dist's for dual boot .I ended up googling { aptitude kubuntu desktop } I stumbled around and then went to linux Q's and searched for it and someone posted this { sudo apt-get install kunbutu-desktop } so whipped up the ole' command line and typed in exactly wwhat was there and this machine took off. It installed the kubuntu desktop inside with ubuntu so now when the bootloader starts kde propts me if I want to run in kde or gnome of course I picked kde aand this is the BOMB , I actually have like 2 kernals in one. The total size was 368 mb (" I think") thats half the OS being installed here. It took about 20 - 30 minutes to install..Try it it is the BOMB ..

Thats good news! When you decide you want to install another Linux distro (yes you can duel boot both, or triple, or . . .) The way i do this, which works quite well, is to use a usb stick to copy the kernel files.
First, I install my second(or third) distro on whatever partitions I have set up. Then, I boot into the new Distro, goto the boot file and copy both the vmlinuz-2.6.xx.xx-whatever file, and the config file(might not even need this) and paste these two files into the other Distros /boot file, then change menu1st in grub to reflect the proper paths. For instance, Right now I have Mepis as my main system. I have the live distro(this might be important for reinstalling grub) I then installed slackware. having already copied the info from mepis, all I did was add the info to slackwares boot menu and changed grub to reflect. works like a charm.add as many as you want. I know there is an easier way using chainloaders but I learned this on my own and the time I spend making the tranfers is next to nothing. good luck!

I have found this out about Kanotix: if you have another Debian-derived distro (Debian, Knoppix, etc) Kanotix will want to install over the existing Debian-type distro. At the last step before actually installing, there is a screen which shows the proposed install. The message names a text file that you can edit before doing the install (something like ~/.knofig or .knocfg). Use vim to edit the disk and partition where it will install, then proceed safely. Otherwise, it will overwrite an existing Debian-type installation.

As far as not recognizing another Linux installation: not true. It recognized my SuSE installation, and did not propose to overwrite any part of it.
