I have 2 computers, one is Linux and the other Win98. They are connected thorugh lan cable. The Win98 machine is connected to the net.
Linux has ssh
If I were across the world how can I access the Linux machine to retreive some files?
ATM I have putty (ssh client) on the win98 machine. I am able to copy stuff from the linux machine to the 98 machine though some windows shares that I mounted on Linux. Is there another way of doing this?
if u goto www.analogx.com u can download a port forwarder that will allow you to foreward port 22 to ur linux machine. than goto dyndns.org or another dns service and set up an account. than get one of the programs they have to update the IP address. than no matter where u are in the world u type in putty: yourdns.yourhost.org and select port 22 and it should work. hope that works for ya.

looks like a good idea, but I don't really want to spend the money. I have 56k modem so im only on that for the time being
A real drama mate. Are you saying that you connect via w98 to the net? If so, your SSH options are severly limited. Security with w98 is not up to the mark!
Lots o work, but I would have the linux box facing the intenet!
thanks
I managed to download that port maper thing and redirect port 22 to my linux box.
What is the best way, and the safest way to transfer files? Smb dosn't really seem safe (from what I hear). And it will be difficute geting files if I were in a netcafe. Is ftp safe enough?
